The 2018 Saddleworth Great Get Together, held on June 23rd, was a resounding success. Inspired by the late MP Jo Cox, the aim was to bring people together to have a fun, family day out. Organised jointly by Saddleworth Round Table, Love Lydgate and the White Hart, where the event was held, and supported by many groups and individuals from across the Saddleworth Community who gave generously of their time and resources , this sunny Sunday afternoon was a really happy occasion.
One extra outcome was the amount of money raised. Henry Burbidge from Saddleworth Round Table said ‘This was never intended to be a fund raiser but people are so generous that we ended up with over £2000!’
The organising group were unanimous in their decision to donate the money to Oldham Mountain Rescue Team. ‘What better organisation truly demonstrates what great things can be achieved when volunteers work selflessly together.’ Said Jennifer Greenwood, Chair of Love Lydgate, ‘They are a real asset to our community.’
The cheque was presented to the OMR Team on July 21st. A donation of £60 was also given to the Lydgate Stitchers who made the gingham ribbons, which people wore to show their commitment to the ‘Get Together’ project.
Charles Brierley said ‘We are already planning next year’s event, so watch out for the date in June 2019, when you can all get together at the Great Get Together!’
